Since 1998, Mary Hirst has been staff organist at Community Church. She was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, the adopted daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Washington Frank and graduated from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. For over 50 years Mary served the church as a minister of music in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee. Her musical education included studies under the noted silent movie and radio organist, Brad Braley, and Dr. C. Warren Becker, soloist and professor of organ at Andrews University from 1959 to 1995. She leads congregational singing and accompanies soloists and ensembles at church services, weddings and funerals, state conferences and community wide events. She accompanies the choir and is a member of the Worship and Music Committee and the Prayer Chain. Music is a joy in Mary's life. She plays with passion and a love for God and our congregation. She chooses music from a wide variety of styles including classical, contemporary and gospel to meet the interest and needs of our diverse congregation, the choir leader and the pastor. She transposes and bridges musical selections from one key to another with near perfect pitch. She likes to read, cook, knit, cultivate flowers and travel internationally. She is a registered nurse and married to Rev. Dr. Bob Hirst, a minister/chaplain, real estate consultant and retired health educator with the State of Tennessee. While in Arizona they recorded two long play albums and compiled a 100 page song book for congregational singing.
